My wife and I started looking in antique stores for something interesting we could repurpose as a cofee table. We had just about given up when we spotted a very weathered wooden door. We bought it without a real plan, but the plan came together rather quickly. I don't have any photos of it, but the door had a large window in the top half. First step was to remove the glass then cut the door off just below the opening.
I liked the flaking paint, but didn't want to make a mess of our living room, so I lightly wire brushed the loose paint and attached the rest with spray on matte polyurethane. I planned to the use wood cut off the top as the legs, but there was not enough to do the cross bracing. I found some new 2x4's at Fleet Farm that had some gray streaks in them. I used an old trick to "weather" the new 2x4's by mxxing steel wool and vinegar. This scrap has the concotion painted on the right half.
I assembled the legs with wood dowels. This was my first use of a dowel jig and it worked great! I love the look of furniture with no fasteners.
Here it is assembled...
Amd here it is in place without glass... Then with glass...
Final look.... Unintentionally matches the tone of our living room carpet and furniture perfectly.
